Chair's Message - Frederick Martin - July, 2009

Fred MartinWe are quickly approaching the Dogdays of August and summer vacations will soon be over.

This summer your ASQ Dallas Leadership Team has been busy setting goals and targets for the upcoming year. It is vital for every organization to have a vision and to set goals. If you don’t have a plan for where you want to be, you may end up where you don’t want to be. The ASQ Dallas Chapter is required to formulate goals that support the values of ASQ and promote member satisfaction.

The year’s first Professional Development will be September 24, 2009.  Please note that for our September Professional Development only, we will meet at the Radisson Hotel across from the Holiday Inn in Richardson, the Holiday Inn is our regular meeting place for the 2009/2010 year.  The Speaker Mike English will be speaking about Quality in reference to his recent assignment in China. Check out the ASQ Dallas Website for directions and details on the speaker.

Please mark your calendar to attend the Fall Conference:

In last newsletter we spoke about Quality practitioners performing midyear assessments.   Are you on target for achieving your goals?  If you need some help developing metrics or perhaps corrective action tools to get your goals back on track, please consider the ASQ Website.

I hope you have had a chance to escape the 100 degree heat. My wife (Kathy) and I had an opportunity to travel to Alaska to celebrate my in-laws 50th anniversary. It was a welcome reprieve from the scorching Texas heat.

FishingWe have been married 27 years, so my hats off to anyone reaching the 50 year milestone. What an accomplishment and a testimony to sticking to achieving a goal. When I assess my current marriage I can’t help but think that Quality Tools could be beneficial for maintaining a healthy relationship.  Tools like mistake proofing, understanding and verification of requirements. I wonder if the many matchmaking websites use Quality tools like Design of Experiment to understand the variables that impact the probability of a successful match. Perhaps someone from our Six Sigma Sig should contact the matchmaking websites and explain the use of DOE (Design of Experiment). One the recent speakers at the Professional Development meeting spoke on leadership styles, the strength s of each of the four styles. My leadership style is an expressive – analytical, knowing your leadership style can aid you in demonstrating effective communication at work and home. Understanding the communication styles between an expressive –analytical (i.e. Fred) and an expressive –amiable (i.e. Kathy) is valuable information.

We have heard the saying that” insanity” can be defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Perhaps for a relationship, (marriage) to grow or a difficult goal to be achieved you have to allow for a little insanity in order to stay the course and to expect different results.

So as we began the 2009/2010 year for the ASQ Dallas Chapter and we continue the balance of the year for our respective occupations, fight the good fight and finish the race; visualize and keep the vision.

“You give me the right people, and I don’t much care what organization you give me.
Good things will happen. Give the wrong people, and it doesn’t matter
what you do with the organization . Bad things will happen.”

Colin Powell
